The Safe Drinking Water
Act (SDWA)-enacted by congress in 1974 and amended in 1986-set federal
regulatory and enforcement standards for water quality throughout the United
States. Administered by the Environmental Protection Agency and various state
agencies, pollution control requirements
and procedures have been established to improve the water quality.
These procedures include
standards of compliance for water purification and for wastewater collection
